The remoteness of many regions from the seas and the absence of seafood in the usual diet is the main reason for the development of iodine deficiency among the country’s population. This is evidenced by the report of the World Health Organization, in which Russia is classified as a country with moderate iodine deficiency. Simple salt iodization is a successful way to combat this condition.
What is iodized salt?
Iodized salt is common table salt (sodium chloride), to which iodide or potassium iodate is chemically added.
Iodized salt is common table salt (sodium chloride), to which iodide or potassium iodate is chemically added. Initially, potassium iodide was added to common salt, but this chemical compound is unstable. The shelf life of salt enriched with potassium iodide was only 3-4 months, therefore, potassium iodate is currently used. This compound is more stable, therefore the shelf life of the salt is 12 months. After this time, it ceases to be iodized, but it can be used in food as usual. That is why, when choosing iodized salt, you need to pay attention to which of the compounds is included in the composition.
Why use iodized salt?
As mentioned above, the geographical location of Russia determines the presence of iodine deficiency among residents. Lack of iodine in pregnant women can cause stillbirth or missed pregnancies, and the development of fetal abnormalities. Children with a deficiency of this microelement may have mental retardation, neurological disorders, and lag in physical development. Adults can suffer from headaches, hair loss, decreased immunity, menstrual irregularities, decreased potency.
The cost of iodized salt is only 10% higher than the cost of ordinary table salt.
Iodine mainly enters the body with food. The richest in them are sea fish, squid, shrimp, seaweed. Those who are unable to consume these foods need an alternative source of iodine. This can be iodized salt. The undoubted advantage of such salt, in addition to iodine useful for the body, is its low cost – on average, the cost of iodized salt is only 10% higher than the cost of ordinary table salt.
The recommended amount of iodine for a person is 150-200 mcg / day, the amount of table salt is 5-7 mg / day. These data vary based on gender, age, weight and physical activity of the person.
Despite all the usefulness of iodized salt, it is important to know that not everyone can eat it. It is contraindicated for people who have thyroid diseases, incl. oncological, tuberculosis, chronic pyoderma, kidney disease.
Of course, you should not give up seafood, which is rich not only in iodine, but also in other macro- and microelements. However, due to the high cost of high-quality seafood, their constant use for food by most of the population of Russia is difficult. Availability, low cost, ease of use – all these are the benefits of using iodized salt.
